Components of Diapers

Polythene film (Back sheet)

Primarily vital in preventing urine from leaking through diapers, this is the back/bottom- most sheet of a typical disposable diaper. They are hydrophobic nonwoven films while Polypropylene films is also used at times, all making urine impermeable.

Polypropylene Nonwoven
(Top sheet & Leak guard)

Hydrophilic & Hydrophobic Both Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic polypropylene non-woven sheets are used in disposable diapers. Philic means permeable to water and phobic means impermeable to water.

Absorbent core - Wood pulp fluff

Cellulose that is used as the core of the diaper to absorb liquids. It lends substantial absorbing capacity to the diaper. The pulp boasts of a high ratio of fibers to weight, lower roughness and shorter fiber length.

Super Absorbent Polymer

Super Absorbent Polymer or “SAP” is also known as Super Absorbent Material or “SAM”. It is used in the form of fine granules to enhance the retention capacity in a baby or adult diaper.

Elastics – Lycra/Spandex

Usually polyurethane or polyester foam elastics, and synthetic rubber or Lycra/ Spandex elastics are used in disposable diapers. Mostly spandex elastics are used presently because they are soft and are also highly efficient elastics.

Adhesive – Hot melts and Elastomeric

The diaper components are usually joined with these adhesives that are in general a combination of resins, oils and tackifiers.
